Welcome to Heritage on the Air (HOTA). By accessing or using this website and participating in HOTA activities, you agree to be bound by these Terms of Use. Please read them carefully. If you do not agree with any part of these terms, you should discontinue use of this website.

1. Acceptance of Terms

These Terms of Use govern your access to and use of the HOTA website located at heritageontheair.co.za and all related services provided by the Bo-Karoo Amateur Radio Club operating under the HOTA initiative. By registering an account, submitting information, or otherwise using this site, you accept these terms in full.

2. Eligibility

  • You must be a licensed amateur radio operator to participate as an Activator or Chaser.
  • You must provide accurate information when registering an account or submitting activations and chase logs.
  • You are responsible for ensuring your amateur radio licence remains valid and in good standing.
  • Minors under the age of 18 may use this site only with the consent and supervision of a parent or legal guardian who accepts these terms on their behalf.

3. User Accounts

  • You are responsible for maintaining the confidentiality of your account credentials.
  • You are fully responsible for all activity that occurs under your account.
  • You must notify us immediately of any unauthorised use of your account.
  • HOTA reserves the right to suspend or terminate accounts that violate these terms or that are used fraudulently.
  • You may not create multiple accounts to manipulate scores or leaderboard standings.

4. Acceptable Use

You agree not to:

  • Submit false, misleading, or fraudulent activation or chase logs.
  • Attempt to gain unauthorised access to any part of this website or its underlying systems.
  • Use this site for any unlawful purpose or in violation of South African law.
  • Interfere with or disrupt the integrity or performance of the website.
  • Harvest or collect personal information of other users without consent.
  • Post or transmit any content that is defamatory, abusive, offensive, or otherwise objectionable.
  • Use automated tools, bots, or scrapers to access or collect data from this site without express permission.

5. Intellectual Property

All content on this website — including text, images, logos, scoring systems, site codes, and design elements — is the intellectual property of the HOTA initiative and the Bo-Karoo Amateur Radio Club, unless otherwise indicated. You may not reproduce, distribute, or commercially exploit any content from this site without prior written permission.

User-submitted content (such as activation reports, photos, and site descriptions) remains the property of the submitting user, but by submitting it you grant HOTA a non-exclusive, royalty-free licence to display and use that content in connection with the operation of the HOTA programme.

6. Heritage Sites & Activations

  • Only approved HOTA points may be activated for contest scores. Approval decisions by the Bo-Karoo Amateur Radio Club management board are final.
  • Activators are solely responsible for obtaining any necessary permissions to access and operate from a heritage site.
  • HOTA accepts no liability for any injury, loss, or damage arising from an activation or visit to a heritage site.
  • Activators must comply with all applicable laws, including those relating to heritage site preservation.

7. Disclaimers

This website and its content are provided “as is” without warranties of any kind, whether express or implied. HOTA does not warrant that the site will be uninterrupted, error-free, or free of viruses or other harmful components. Information on this site is provided for general informational purposes and may not always be current or accurate.

8. Limitation of Liability

To the fullest extent permitted by applicable South African law, HOTA and the Bo-Karoo Amateur Radio Club shall not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages arising out of your use of, or inability to use, this website or the HOTA programme.

HOTA reserves the right to update or modify these Terms of Use at any time. Changes will be published on this page with an updated date. Continued use of the website after changes are posted constitutes your acceptance of the revised terms.
