Did You Know?
Spioenkop Slagveld (Spion Kop Battlefield) is a site of the Battle of Spion Kop, fought on 23–24 January 1900 during the Second Anglo-Boer War (1899–1902). The battle took place near the town of Harrismith (then in the Orange Free State, now in KwaZulu-Natal) on a steep hill called Spion Kop, meaning 'Lookout Hill' in Afrikaans. British forces under General Sir Charles Warren attempted to cross the Tugela River to relieve the besieged town of Ladysmith, but were repelled by Boer forces led by General Louis Botha. The battle resulted in heavy casualties: approximately 243 British soldiers killed and over 1,100 wounded or missing, while Boer losses were around 68 killed and 267 wounded. The site is now a provincial heritage site and part of the Spioenkop Nature Reserve, which includes a dam and game viewing.
