About This Site

1. The Bank in Rosendal (Free State) • Origins: Built in 1911, "The Bank" is one of Rosendal’s earliest structures following the town's founding in 1908. • Architecture: It is a classic example of eastern Free State sandstone construction, featuring thick walls built to serve the commercial and farming community. It formerly operated as a branch of Barclays Bank. • Decline and Revival: As Rosendal experienced economic decline through the mid-20th century and became quiet by the 1990s, the old bank building eventually sat unused. In recent decades, following the town's revival as an arts and heritage colony, the building was meticulously restored. • Present Day: Today, The Bank operates as a heritage guesthouse and part of Rosendal Heritage Properties, featuring its original banking hall (now a living room with a wood stove) and a wine cellar housed inside the old bank vault.
